The assessment of the water sector deals with the review of the implementation of the 2005-2009 additional growth support program, the overall situation of the sector as well as the water development program including the progress made in the implementation of the major infrastructure projects.
A package of 1,422.4 billion dinars has been mobilized to finance the infrastructure development program of the water sector. This has led to the commissioning in 2007 of two dams : Oued Athmania, in the wilaya (department) of Mila, and Tichy Haf, in the wilaya of Bejaia.
With the 13 new dams now being developed (Koudiat Acerdoune, in the wilaya of Bouira, Bougous, in the wilaya of Tarf, Douéra, in the wilaya of Algiers, Prise Chellif and Kerrada, in the wilaya of Mostaganem, Boussiaba and Kissir, in the wilaya of Jijel, Ourkis, in the wilaya of Oum el Bouaghi, Safsaf, in the wilaya of Tébessa, Kaf Eddir, in the wilaya of Tipaza, Tabellout, in the wilaya of Béjaia, Drâa diss and Mahouane, in the wilaya of Sétif), the overall surface water impoundment capacity will increase to reach 5.2 to 7.4 billion cubic metres with 69 dams and 26 major transfers. This will improve the water supplies to the population, agriculture and industries.
