- Six million dollars is the sum paid by the company Cash to Sonatrach Group in compensation for the accident which occured in a Skikda plant in January 2004. The total amount paid to Sonatrach reached 1 billion dollars in 2005.
- The package alloted in the framework of Sonatrach’s investment plan for 2006-2010 amounts to 32.2 billion dollars including 20 billion dollars for upstream activities, 6.1 billion dollars for pipeline transport, 5 billion dollars for downstream activities and 900 million dollars for marketing.
- Algeria has the third largest gold reserves in the Arab world with 173.6 tons and an annual production of 365 kg.
- Sonelgaz gas subscribers numbered 2.1 million in 2005.
- Sonatrach covered in early 2006, 40% of the national mining field, i.e. 700,000 km2.
- Algeria’s crude oil sales to the United States account for 25% of its global oil exports.
- Algeria has reached a raw drilling rate of 9 wells for 10,000 km2 against an African rate of 6 wells for 10,000 km2.
- The licenses granted to the private companies and the achievements recorded in the development of infrastructure for the storage and distribution of oil products increased by 21% in 2005, from 961 to 1,163 units.
- Bitumen plant projects numbered 5 in 2005 (1 in 2004), 6 for those related to storage (2 in 2004) whereas 2 licences for the production of lubrifiants were granted (none in 2004).
- The mining sector accumulated 2.5 billion dollars in 2005 as part of the awarding of mining licences where as it was in deficit the previous years. The sector also created 17000 jobs (private sector) and received 50 million dollars in investments by foreign partners.
- The gold mine of Amesmessa will produce its first gold ingots by the second quarter of 2007.
- Sonatrach is to invest 33 billion dollars in the hydrocarbons sector between 2006 and 2010 including 9.5 billion dollars in field development (Chakib Khelil, 1 may 2006, Radio channel 2)
- The gold production has reached 700 kg /year in the mine of Tirek and 3.5 tons of gold are expected to be produced by the Amesmassa mine once its construction is completed in 2007.
- Sonatrach exported 14.2 million tons of refined products in 2001. Its sales fell from 2002 to 2005 as a result of increased use of diesel cars. They dropped respectively from 2.5 million tons in 2002-2003, 10 million tons in 2004 to 9.5 million tons in 2005. Sonatrach’s annual deficit is estimated at more than 100 million dollars.
- The energy sector represents 41% of GDP, 60% of the national budget and 97% of hard currency income
- There are 2.1 million gas subscribers and 5.6 million electricity subscribers
- 590 localities are involved (2006) in the natural gas supply program
- About 143 mining licenses (69 for operation and 74 for research) were awarded through competitive bids in 2005 for an amount of 708 million dinars.
- According to a fact sheet released by the french embassy, Algeria ranked as France’s 6th crude oil supplier in 2005, ensuring 6.1% of its oil supplies. During the same year, Algeria also ranked as the 4th natural gas supplier of France with a 16% share behind Norway, Russia and the Netherlands. France accounts for 40% of Algerian LNG exports.
- 50 oil discoveries have been made since 2002 including 17 in 2006.
- Sonatrach group has set as its 2006-2010 medium-term development plan objectives, to increase its production by 30% by 2010 through its activities abroad, by privileging the oil zones of Africa.
