Environment Release: 22/06/2008 | Last update: 01/01/1970 - 325,000 tons of special industrial wastes are generated each year. This volume adds to 2 million tons of such substances which are stored each year. The financial losses due to these wastes are estimated at 0.15% of GDP or 60 million dollars. - About 450,000 tons of zinc muds have been stored in Ghazaouet for 20 years. - Every Algerian citizen produced in 2006 about 1 kg of waste perd ay and the trend is increasing and may reach 1.5 kg per day in the great urban centres. - 48 built up areas are seismic in the Mitidja. - The line of the Algerian coast looses 2.25 metres each year on account, of urban sprawling among others, which has affected about 60% of the littoral. - The dumping site of Oued Smar ( - The CO2 generated from the dumping site of Oued Smar can be sold to other countries for industrial re-use at 10 to 15 dollars a ton, i.e. an income of 10 million dollars for Algeria (according to the Ministry of Environment). - The National meteorological Office (ONM) has 77 surface observation stations, 12 upper air synoptic stations and 3 special research and observation stations (Ksar Chellala, Tamanrasset and Tiaret) as well as five weather radars and more than 400 weather stations. - The international standard concerning green spaces is generally 10%. In - 45,000 cases of scorpio poisoning are reported each year. - 1.5 million tons of waste are generated by households and 300,000 tons by industries whereas about 2 million tons of special waste are stored each year. - The magot (Macaca sylvanus) monkey is a species protected under the Washington Convention and there are only 14,000 such animals left worldwide. Captured by poachers, the magot monk is sold between 3,000 and 4,000 dinars in Algeria and resold between 800 and 1,000 euros in Europe. - In 2003, there were some 235 waste incinerators in - 77 packages and 4,428,000 of black plastic bags were seized and 247 wholesale and retail traders were warned against the use of such products by the relevant services (health, trade, industry, environment and police) from January till September 2006 in various departments of the country as a result of new regulations banning the use of black plastic bags. - Algeria produces each year approximately 180,000 tons of waste oils that are poured in nature, 70% of which are oils used by automobiles. - 4,471 environmental offences involving 6,361 people were dealt with and reported by the National gendarmerie between 2001 and 2006, including 3,412 cases related to sand robbery, 658 illegal well drillings and other cases concerning the plundering of forest resources. |
